What in the world is going on with our political system?! The advent of the 24-hour media cycle combined with social media can be a good thing but also creates this constant need to top one another.  One outrageous event or comment needing to top the next all day, everyday.  And in politics, this is disastrous.  Disastrous because it is making a mockery out of our political system.  Disastrous because it has rapidly allowed lies to be accepted political discourse. And, disastrous because it is setting up an unstable system and therefore unstable future for our kids.

I’m not writing this post to push a political agenda — I’m not taking one side over the other.  I’m writing to point out that it’s insane that there are sides.  That our political system has become more like the Yankees/Red Sox rivalry than a republic, a public matter that should be discussed, not always debated. That being said, I cannot let what happened this weekend go unsaid.  A candidate for the US Senate said,

“‘From what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare,’ said Akin of pregnancy caused by rape. ‘If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume maybe that didn’t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist.'”

This same candidate has since apologized and claims he mis-spoke, he didn’t mean to say “legitimate,” he meant to say “forcible.”  That’s not really an apology, nor is it mis-speaking.  He thinks women have some magical pregnancy defense mechanism that turns on if we are really getting raped.  WHAT?!

As a feminist and mother I refuse to allow “these” men to continue to propagate lies.  Abortions don’t cause breast cancer-science. Women aren’t born with a magical rape shield- science.  I’m sick of allowing lies to be ok.  How can we tell our children not to lie and then allow our politicians to do so?

I cannot let my children grow up to distrust their own government.  How can we change this? We definitely need more women/moms in office…but we also need a more realistic way to get them there.  This frustrated mom needs your ideas!
