Mommy loves you, too!

Mommy loves you, too!

Here in the Allard household we don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day. It was never a big deal to us when we were dating and that didn’t change once we were married.

But, it has always been my mom’s favorite holiday, and she always made a big deal out of it for us. There was always candy, cards and thoughtful little gifts; she even continued the tradition while my sister and I were away at college, saving the treats for the next time she’d visit. Even now, she finds a way to spoil us with little pink and red packages.

It’s because of this tradition with my mom that I’m excited to celebrate Valentine’s Day in little ways with my daughter. While she still seems a bit young for heart-themed arts and crafts projects and isn’t in school yet to experiment with handmade Valentines for classmates, I’m inspired to get started anyway, through music.

We listen to a lot of music in our house and in the car. It’s often on in the background when we’re playing and while her favorite tunes seem to be Top 40 pop songs, we listen to all types of artists. I’ll often hear a song and think of my daughter – it doesn’t have to be an entire song, but sometimes just a couple lines that make me want to sing off-key at the top of my lungs to her. I can’t help it. I hopelessly love my daughter.

So, sweet girl, these are the songs I’m dedicating to you this Valentine’s Day:

Isn’t She Lovely by Stevie Wonder

Isn’t she lovely

Isn’t she wonderful

Isn’t she precious

Less than one minute old

I never thought through love we’d be

Making one as lovely as she

But isn’t she lovely, made from love?

This Is the New Year by Ian Axel

Say everything you’ve always wanted,

Be not afraid of who you really are,

Cause in the end we have each other,

And that’s at least one thing worth living for,

And I would give the world to you

You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker

You are so beautiful

To me

Can’t you see

You’re everything I hoped for

You’re everything I need

You are so beautiful to me

Crying, My Little One by Natalie Merchant

Crying, my little one, footsore and weary

I must tramp on through the winter night dreary

Fall asleep, pretty baby, warm on my shoulder

While the snow falls upon me colder and colder

You are my dearest one, and I have not another

Sleep warm and soft in the arms of your mother

Sleep soft, my darling, my trouble and treasure

Dream of pretty things, dream of your pleasure

Haven’t Met You Yet by Michael Buble

I might have to wait

I’ll never give up

I guess it’s half timing

And the other half’s luck

Wherever you are

Whenever it’s right

You’ll come out of nowhere

And into my life

…I know that we can be so amazing

And baby, your love is gonna change me…

Power of Two by The Indigo Girls

So we’re okay

We’re fine

Baby I’m here to stop your crying

Chase all the ghosts from your head

I’m stronger than the monster beneath your bed

Smarter than the tricks played on your heart

We’ll look at them together, then we’ll take them apart

Adding up a total of a love that’s true

Multiply life by the power of two

Motherland by Natalie Merchant

It’s your happiness

I want most of all

And for that I’d do anything at all…
