“On the night you were born, the moon shone with such wonder that the stars peeked in to see you and the night wind whispered, ‘Life will never be the same.’

Because there had never been anyone like you …ever in the world.”

Your first words to me this morning were “I’m FIVE!” And indeed you are.  It’s finally here, your birthday.  I hope that the day (week?) is everything you hoped for.  I want to tell you a couple of things about you that I’ve come to learn in the five years that I’ve been blessed to be your mom.

First of all, thank you for being here.  I was worried that I would never get to have you and then you came so early, I thought I’d never get to take you home.  So thank you for being the feisty fighter that you are.  You started your life fighting and you continue fighting, although the fights lately are about brushing your hair.  That’s ok, I’ll take it.

I love that you are funny and stubborn and dramatic, all within moments of each other.  It drives me crazy, but I love it! You say the funniest things.  You told me, “I don’t want to get married.  I just came to dance!”  Ok.  I’ll worry about that when you’re older.

If anyone had told me that my best friend would be a little girl, I would have laughed at them.  But now, when you want me to wear matching “BFF” bracelets, I’m all in!  You woke me up the other night with a scream.  When I came into your room, you asked me “Mommy, who’s your favorite?”  You are, my dear.  You are.  (The advantage of having an only child!) Now go the eff to sleep.

You are loving and sweet and polite.  I am so proud and impressed with your please and thank yous.  You always tell us how much you love us and that we’re the best ever! To which we reply, “No, you’re the best!”  Thank goodness you are a snuggler.  I love how gentle and caring you are to our dog and cat.  You understand that they are family too.

You’re like your dad in so many ways.  You have his smarts and his stubborn streak.  There’s no fooling you! Constantly on the go. In new situations, you hang back until you’re comfortable, then look out! Here you come!  I think you get your knock-knock joke talent from him too, but I’m not sure if I would call that a talent, exactly…

You’re like me in so many ways too.  You’re a silly goofball.  Always ready to bust a move! But of course, you’re clumsy like me too, so that doesn’t always work out. You can really put an outfit together! You’re my partner in crime, we’re always going off together. I love our time together. You got your love of outdoors from Daddy, but your fear of bugs from me.  Sorry about that combo!

You are funny, and smart and creative.  Lately you’ve been making up songs and wiggling along with them. You crack me up daily.

I want you to know that I am amazed by you every day.  I am grateful for you.

I want to give you the moon…and then I want you to clean up after yourself.

I love you. Happy Birthday!

“You are the one and only ever you.”
