don watermellonFair warning…many cliches headed your way.  Where does the time go?  It seems like only yesterday that he got here.  I can’t believe how big he’s gotten.  Ok, ok…I think I got it out of my system.  ‘The Don’ turns 4 tomorrow.  This year was a big one…Don stopped being a baby and became a boy.  My guy is funny, athletic, creative and quite the talker.  He’s a picky eater and a bit anal retentive… a bizarre and beautiful mix of my husband and I.

Having kids is a real trip and I suppose as a parent, birthdays allow you the opportunity to reflect on where you’ve been that’s gotten you to today.  It certainly hasn’t been easy.  Each day presents a new challenge and another lesson to be taught, encouragement given, and manners requested.  But, each day also brings laughter, new adventures, and a lot of excitement.  What made age 3 so spectacular was seeing my son unfold into a little boy with ideas and interests–the returns of all the time and love given.

I’ve been talking up his birthday quite a bit with him, so he’s pretty thrilled.  We have this tradition in my family of given the person  whose special day it is the ‘red plate’…so I plan on starting that tradition with Don tomorrow morning at breakfast.  He’s in pre-school, so he’ll also celebrate with his friends during the day.  Although, in this new world we live in, Don is not permitted to bring homemade goodies or anything with chocolate to school.  I’m at a loss…but have decided to take him to the grocery after school today to pick out a treat that his entire class can enjoy together.  Anyone with suggestions of delicious/safe goodies, I’m all ears.

Other than that, I think we’ll do a lot of outdoor time tomorrow night with a special dinner and ice cream.  Sunday is Don’s family party where he’ll make out like a bandit, so I’m not too concerned with the gift part.  I’m just excited to celebrate him.  Cliche warning–I never realized I could love someone this much.  Happy birthday to my big guy. Don man’s turning 4!
