Since before my husband and I were married, I had the privilege of accompanying him and his family on their annual summer vacations in Maine. Now, the tradition continues with our two kids. We’re leaving soon (in less than 48 hours…not that I’m counting) and although I’m practically ripping my hair out trying to get everything set and ready to go both at work and with laundry and packing (JOY) I am finding myself really appreciating this tradition we have going on here!

I am a lover of traditions to begin with, but having a family vacation is definitely one of my favorites. It’s a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. An escape from distractions like work and other obligations that sometimes make quality family time feel scarce. There’s nothing like working an 11 hour work day (my day today) that makes you truly giddy at the thought of getting away from it all.

Our family vacation gives us the opportunity to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company. Our days are filled with fun swimming, boating, playing board and card games, eating, laughing. Now that we have kids, it’s no longer the same lazy, do whatever you want kind of relaxing. It’s a different kind of relaxing. Our vacation is now filled with extra morning snuggles because mommy and daddy don’t have to rush off to work. It’s more about savoring the small moments. The moments we don’t always have the ability to take advantage of while we’re back home. It’s about creating memories that my children will cherish for the rest of their lives.

Each summer we return to our beloved Caribou Pond, way the heck up there in Maine. Sure we might go to the same place each year, but each year new memories are created. The kind of memories that bring a smile to my face and carry me through the year until it’s time to go back. Memories like these…
