This is my first week back to work after the summer off.  I know you are all thinking, “Gee Cora, way to rub it in.”  Honestly?  I hate the summer off schedule.  I’d so rather go to school year round.  [Wanna know more?  Check out this link.]  One of the biggest reasons I hate the schedule is because of the head-game educators end up playing.  In no other profession that I can think of do you have to start and stop every single year.  It forces you to have a much different focus to everything you do.  This feeling is only heightened by the fact that I work in a school that only has one grade.  So the start of the school year is always difficult for me.  The level of energy you have to sustain at the beginning of the school year after two months of sustaining minimal energy is a challenge.

The first day of school makes me feel like I need this soundtrack:

Don’t get me wrong…I LOVE what I do, but every year I too end up feeling nostalgic at the end of the summer home with the kids (even though right now they desperately need structure and routine) thinking about all the fun we’ve had together.  But at the same time, there are some things I really look forward to at the beginning of the school year:

  • A commute.  I remember when I was home on leave with Kitten I told Honey this was what I missed the most.  It’s a centering part of my day.
  • Hot coffee.  Ahhh…If there is a mom out there that is at home with kids that successfully completes a pot of coffee while it’s still warm, please tell me your secret!
  • Colleagues.  I’m really fortunate to work in a great school district and a great school.  I truly enjoy working with these people and seeing their smiling faces everyday.
  • The kids.  My students are the reason I do my job.  If all the other bullshit would fall away and I just got to hang with kids all day and help grow them into successful adults…well, that’d be the perfect job.

So with that, I’ll leave you with a video that was sent to Honey by one of his colleagues.  It’s by John Green, of Fault in Our Stars fame.  He does a weekly vlog that I guess I’ll have to look into more.  This just about sums up how I feel about school and helps me get excited for another school year.
