OK. SO maybe that’s exaggerating juuuuuust a little. How about “The BEST Christmas in 4 Years.” Yep. That’s exactly how it went down at our house this year. I was so afraid that if I said anything I’d jinx it. So all Christmas- from Christmas Eve until New Year’s Eve- I didn’t even breathe a word of how Merry our Christmas was going. Sure we had tantrums and tears and whines and OMG spoilage on every level, but for the first time in four years, our Christmas finally ROCKED again.
Let’s take a quick trip down memory lane here- 4 years ago I was very pregnant with Jake. Super pregnant. Couldn’t eat my weight in Christmas cookies, no matter how much I wanted to. Couldn’t drink wine on Christmas Eve, and forget the morning mimosas on New Year’s Eve. Couldn’t even ask for my favorite types of Christmas presents- CLOTHES! Because who wants MATERNITY CLOTHES on Christmas. Ehhh, no one. EVER.
Three years ago, we had a 10 month old baby Jake, and he was celebrating his first Christmas. We gave him more gifts than could fit in his room! But obvs, a tiny child under the age of one has NO CLUE about the joys of ripping open presents and watching Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.
Two years ago we had a 2 and a half year old. Jake “kinda” got the whole Christmas thing, and we didn’t have to wrap all of his gifts in tissue paper. Thanks to my studious MOM reading of several parenting maggies and blogs, who said to wrap your child’s gifts in tissue paper for easy opening. So we had that going for us.
One year ago, we had a brand spanking new tiny three month old baby join our family! Livvy was only THREE MONTHS OLD last Christmas! So now we had a toddler who wanted a ton of presents, loved Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, tore open presents with real wrapping paper, and a tiny little baby that was not sleeping through the night. Can we just stop circling the airport and LAND THIS BABY?!
Three weeks ago we had a 3 and a half year old, a 15 month old, and you know what? You know what we had? We had the hap-hap-happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny F*cking Kaye. But we DID! We REALLY DID! Good God, Livvy ripped open presents, Jake played with legos, we left cookies and carrots out for Santa and his crew, we watched real-life Christmas movies on TV, and we OMG wait for it- LOVED IT!
I hear so many moms out there saying, “Don’t rush time! The kids will only be little for so long!” I get it. I get that whole tiny baby magic smell. But the four of us on Christmas morning, all just jivin’ and sipping coffee (and milk) and eating Christmas cookies while opening presents? Oh man was it the BEST! I can’t wait ’till next year when the kiddos are another year older, and another year more into this amazing and magical holiday. The Best, baby, the BEST is yet to come!
