We all have our individual New Year’s Resolutions, but have you ever thought of creating a resolution for the whole family? We started ours this past week and so far so good!
We decided that in order to be more engaged in our family life, cutting cable would a great start. Yes, you heard me right, we cancelled cable, in the dead of winter! I was scared to do it, because I love watching my reality TV shows and let’s face it, what better way to relax this winter than to be in front of a TV; unless your fortunate to sit on a beach that is!
So, this was our first week at it and while it took a few days to get used to it, I actually feel more relaxed, less stressed and tense. Doesn’t make sense does it? Well, months before we got rid of cable I noticed that I was always rushing to finish things around the house so I could sit and watch TV. Now, I just feel more relaxed and not worried about “having” to sit in front of the TV to relax, I have other outlets such as reading and decorating! Even better, I feel as if I am spending more time with my husband and daughter.
While TV has its benefits, I believe for our family, it created a barrier to communication and became a babysitter to our marriage. It was just “so easy” to sit, watch TV and not have to work on other things, much more important.
For us, right now, cutting cable has been a great experience, we are happier and more engaged as a family. Fingers crossed to keeping this momentum going.
Does your family have a New Year’s Resolution? If so, what is it and how is it working for you?
