Quotes

“Like all working mothers, sometimes I feel like a terrible mother and sometimes I feel like a terrible employee.  But for the most part, I try to give myself a break, which is something I urge all mothers to do – to live your life with a cloud of guilt about everything you are doing is just not good for anybody.” Katie...

Quotes

“I think it’s a false trade-off to say quality time vs. quantity – you have to have both.  So if you have long work hours like I did, how do you get rid of things in your life you don’t need in order to put that extra time into your children?  I always supported the women I worked with having time off to go to parent-teacher conferences and doctors’ appointment or bringing their infant into the office.” Hillary...

Follow Up: Working Out With a Baby is Interesting!

So, yesterday I blogged about my journey back to running after having a baby a few months ago. Today I just wanted to point out how different life is when you have kids. I decided I want to get back into doing some strength training and we have a great video called Cyclo-Core. It has body weight conditioning routines which I used before I got pregnant and really like. I couldn’t get it together in the morning to do the workout before work, which is what I typically do because the only time I have to workout without the baby is bright and early. Since I was trying to get this workout in after work (and after picking up the baby at daycare) I had to try to do it with her. I set up the pack n’ play and put all sorts of fun toys in it to keep her amused. As soon as I started the video the baby started crying so I literally was doing squats standing next to the pack n’ play trying to console her. I was able to get through about 10-15 minutes of the workout but then her cries hit maximum level and I had to stop and figure out how to stop the crying. Oh to be a mom. The only thing that calms the baby down at night is going...

Save, Save, Save!

So I have been using Amazon.com’s Subscribe and Save program for a few months now to buy diapers and have been saving a lot of money.  I have been saving about $1/package off the retail price and they get delivered to my door with free shipping.  Score! The other day I got an email to sign up for Amazon Mom.  I clicked the link thinking it would be some fee, but heck, I’ll check it out. Well, I find out it is FREE, I can save 30% off diapers and wipes, and can save more money on other household and kid/baby stuff.  Now I am saving about $4/package off retail price.  On top of that, you get a Free 2 day shipping on Amazon Prime eligible items (not just baby stuff) for 2 months and get an additional month of free shipping with every $25 order.  I’ve already gotten myself through Christmas for free shipping… Definite...

I’ll admit it….sometimes I want to sell them….

I love my children unconditionally. I would donate any part of my body (and have) if they needed it, cancel every meeting or quit my job if they needed me to, stay up all night with their fevers and runny noses… Yes, I would stand in front of a bus for them. But you know… sometimes I want to sell them.  I have even composed an eBay ad just for those occasions. Everyone has those moments, those days… those years.  We all at some point look at our lives, stressed to the max with work, spouses, animals, and screaming, yelling, running, Tasmanian Devils kids and wonder, “What the hell did I get myself into?” If you haven’t had one of those days you are either in denial,  lying, or have now been fairly warned that they are coming. The truth that no one speaks is that even though we will always love our children, we don’t always like them. Oh my goodness, I can’t believe she just said that…. But I bet some of you are sitting there nodding your head saying, “Yup, that about sums it up!” Before I actually had my own kids I would never have imagined these feelings would every rise up in me.  No way, every time I looked at them it would be in wonder and awe of what my husband and I...

Working Mom Saves Dinner

Remember when you and your husband would come home from work, play your usual game of Let’s Make a Deal dinner version- What’s behind cabinet door number 2?! Maybe you’ll find dinner staring out at you from the refrigerator or freezer, but oh no! Wait!  Now you’ve resorted to schlepping over to your pantry to maybe find that last box of Hamburger Helper, and by god, you hope it’s not the Tuna Helper!  The two of you eventually decide on the quick and dirty because it’s already past 7:00 and your stomachs are telling you they’ve waited long enough.  Linguine and jarred pasta sauce it is!  As it boils you open up that half finished bottle of merlot from last night, and sip and chat about your days at the office until the pasta’s done, and you’re ready to sit in front of the television- pasta bowl in hand- to watch your pre-recorded Law and Order episodes from two weeks ago. Fast forward to today and you find yourself at home in front of the sink (with your work clothes still on, and not those worn out yoga pants and 5k race tee shirt that is your after work uniform), with baby strapped in front of you in his baby bjorn while you’re washing out the bottles that came home with him from daycare, sterilizing them, and getting them...
