FLU SHOT – Yay or Nay?

Thought I had already decided on this – Now I am rethinking my choice.

“In addition, thimerosal (used in Flu shots) has been implicated as a cause of increased rates of Autism.  As a result it has been removed from many standard pediatric vaccines.  All EXCEPT the annual flu vaccine.  To get a flu vaccine without thimerosal requires an express request as very few of these vaccines are manufactured.”

Little man received his 2 mandated Flu shots last flu season as an infant.  When they went to give him his shot this year, a couple of weeks ago,  the Dr stopped when she asked me if he is allergic to eggs – well I don’t have a definitive “yes” he is allergic,  I just know he had just turned a year and had only tried eggs twice in that time frame of turning one, both times his little face broke out almost immediately with red splotches – but faded within the hour.   So – no go the Dr wouldn’t give him the shot and we have an appointment scheduled for next week with a Pediatric Allergist in West Hartford to see if it is a sensitivity or an allergy.

Now we are already since birth on an Alternative Vaccine schedule – which means he gets shots spread out further and the Dr opts for different ones at different times instead of the usual clumping of shots.  I thought we were doing good with this decision of Alternate Route and wasnt told I had an option about the Flu shot last year with little man as an infant.  – Now after reading an article I think I may Opt OUT of the FLu shot for him this year and going forward.  – Any one else have any thoughts on this?

Excerpt from Article:    “In a study published in the British Medical Journal, scientists concluded that the effectiveness of annual flu shots has been exaggerated.  In adults research shows that the flu shot does not significantly reduce the number of hospital stays, time off work, or deaths from the flu/ influenza and its complications. .  The story is the same when we consider the second most vulnerable population, young children.  In a study published by Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews states, “A review of 51 studies involving nearly 264,000 children found that inactivated flu shots (the normal seasonal vaccine) were similar in effectiveness to placebos (sugar-water) in children under 2.”  In addition, another study claims children who receive the flu vaccine are 3x more likely to be hospitalized for treatment of the flu.

How is the Flu shot made?

The flu virus used to make vaccine is grown in fertilized chicken eggs. ( I did not know this) This is why anyone with a chicken or egg allergy can not get a flu shot.  During the February before each fall’s flu season, three strains of flu are selected based on the statistic probability they will cause widespread illness.  Fertilized chicken eggs are then inoculated with the three virus strains and vaccines are manufactured.

In addition to the 3 virus strains, the flu shot contains many other additives and preservatives including:

  • Thimerosal (a mercury derivative)
  • Ethylene glycol (antifreeze)
  • Phenol (a disinfectant dye)
  • Aluminum
  • Benzethonium chloride (a disinfectant)
  • Formaldehyde (a cadaver preservative and disinfectant)

The vaccine additive that has gotten the most press is Thimerosal, which contains approximately 49 percent ethylmercury, a known neurotoxin.  Both children and fetuses are extremely vulnerable to the effects of thimerosal, yet we encourage our children and pregnant women to get vaccinated.  Studies have indicated that incredibly tiny concentrations of thimerosal induced:

  • DNA strand breakage
  • Cell membrane damage
  • Cell death

In addition, thimerosal has been implicated as a cause of increased rates of Autism.  As a result it has been removed from many standard pediatric vaccines.  All EXCEPT the annual flu vaccine.  To get a flu vaccine without thimerosal requires an express request as very few of these vaccines are manufactured.

Emerging research also suggests a link between the annual flu vaccine and Alzheimer’s disease because of the combination of mercury, aluminum, and formaldehyde in the vaccine.  At a National Vaccine Information Center (NVIC) International Vaccine Conference in 1997, one expert stated that anyone who had five consecutive flu vaccine shots increased their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease by a factor of 10 over someone who received only two or fewer shots.  It is estimated that by 2025, 22 million people will develop Alzheimer’s disease.”

  1. I agree with Kim, since I am a molecular biologist masters I was very concerned with the information that has been put out there about vaccines.

If you look at actual studies there is no link and even worse the orignal study was found to be fraudulant and not able to be replicated. So basically parents around the world have been steered toward a false theory while there children who suffer from autism are not getting actual information or research to help.

I think if you do not want to get the flu vaccine than don’t, but there are benefits since it help build antibodies to certain strains. At the same token it cannot protect you if the strains mutate.

So if you do not want to get it than it is your choice but do not not get it because of a fraudulant claim of bad science related to autism.

  2. Well its not just the mercury thing – right now his Dr wont give him the shot till we are cleared by the Allergist, for the eggs issue. And yes we Vaccinate – we just do it on an alternate schedule instead of 2, 3 or more shots at the same time.
I too have had the flu shot in the past – but also have gotten the flu after being vaccinated once – must have been different strand. So we will wait and see what happens at Dr office and if an allergy and I will definitely look into that book. Thanks Melanie!

  3. The amount of thimerosal (mercury) in the flu shot is the equivalent of eating a tuna sandwich.

From the information I’ve looked at, since thimerosal has been removed from nearly all (all?) pediatric vaccines, getting a flu shot each season is unlikely to cause mercury poisoning, if that’s what you’re worried about.

If you want an in-depth *reliable* (i.e., not conspiracy-theory driven) source on all things vaccine-related, check out The Vaccine Book by Dr. Sears. It is an extremely complicated issue, and different readers will interpret the data in different ways, but based on his book I concluded that for my kid, the potential benefits of vaccines outweigh the potential negatives. I don’t remember if he deals with the flu vaccine specifically, or just the standard childhood vaccines, but it is a worthwhile read and the only authoritative source I have encountered.

Sadly, because of the way we live today, our babies and ourselves are exposed to all kinds of nasties everyday just by eating, breathing, drinking water, walking around … it’s doubtful that one flu shot is going to make a difference, unless you have an actual history of indicators for Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

Even taking 2 aspirin for a headache entails a risk. What if you suddenly come down with an allergy to it? What if you are one of the tiny fraction of people who have a freak reaction? What if …

I just got the flu shot. When I was pregnant, I got the flu and was so sick I couldn’t move and was in constant pain for 3 days. I felt like, or wished, I would die. It was not quite as bad as being in labor, but up there. I am going to get the flu shot and get it for my kid every season from now on. Plus, the daycare requires it, so not much choice anyway. I just haven’t heard enough to scare me out of it yet.
