Today is Spread the Word to End the Word Day. Started by the Special Olympics organization, it’s a campaign to stop people from using the words retarded or retard in reference to people with special needs or abilities. Today, Ellen Seidman, whom I’ve mentioned before is sharing a video of her son Max to help demonstrate the impact of using those words. She also outlines a Twitter project she conducted a while back that inspired me to reply to one of my friends on Twitter (a real friend, not a Twitter/Facebook “friend”) and ask him not to use that word anymore. I felt powerful doing that.
So please, take a minute to watch this and help Spread the Word to End the Word.
