Where Does the Easter Bunny Live?

When I recently asked my girls if they wanted to go see the Easter Bunny, I was completely unprepared for my three year old to respond by saying excitedly, “yeah, but where does he live?”

“He lives… at his house….in Bunnyville,” I reply as my husband shoots me a look from across the table as if to say “ha-ha, glad I’m not the one she asked.”  I continue to explain to my daughter.  “We are going to see him at the mall though because that’s where he visits children.”

“Oh,” she says and the questions stop.  Thank goodness I say to myself.

This got me thinking.  The Easter Bunny really is an amazing and magical creature and I imagine it becomes quite difficult to explain because there really is no consistent story or legend behind his existence.

Everybody knows that Santa lives at the North Pole with his reindeer, elves and Mrs. Claus but where does the Easter Bunny live?  And who does he live with?  Does he have helpers?  Does he have a candy-making shop?  Is Peter Cottontail the Easter Bunny?  There are so many unanswered questions.

I decided to do some online research to find some answers.

Wikipedia states that the Easter Bunny or Easter Rabbit (aka Spring Bunny) “is a character depicted as a rabbit bringing Easter eggs who sometimes is depicted with clothes. In legend, the creature brings baskets filled with colored eggs, candy and sometimes also toys to the homes of children, and as such shows similarities to Father Christmas, as they both bring gifts to children on the night before their respective holiday.”

Still, I am stumped as there is no mention of where the Easter Bunny lives.

According to WikiAnswers, the Easter Bunny lives in a very deep hole in the ground somewhere on Easter Island.  Other sites state that the Easter Bunny lives in April Valley, Spring Valley or Egg Land.  I have never heard of any of these places.

What I recall knowing about the Easter Bunny as a child was that he brought yummy candy and treats and he hid plastic colored eggs.  That’s about it.

And so, the Easter Bunny’s true address will have to remain a mystery I guess.  It must be a strategy to keep the candy thieves away.

Why is it that there is no common tale about the Easter Bunny? What do you tell your children about this magical rabbit who delivers candy around the world?

  1. When I was growing up, besides my Pat the Bunny book, I remember reading this book all the time around Easter. It’s pretty much how I think of the Easter Bunny (besides the Cadbury Bunny, of course). I think this will find its way into Jake’s basket… 🙂

  2. We have a real bunny who lives under our shed, and coincidently, we did where I lived as a kid, too. When I was little, my mom said it was the Easter bunny, and he makes all the baskets in this bunny home under the shed. She went so far as to toss foil eggs around the shed a couple of days before Easter that he “dropped” going in! I have continued this with Nate, and planted some foil eggs outside the other day near our shed…he went NUTS! 🙂 I just feel bad for the day he no longer believes…
