Tasty Thursday: Feeding a Friendship

About two weeks ago, new neighbors, another young couple, moved in next door.  To be neighborly, and that totally-cliché-possibly-creepy-lady-next-door, I forced upon them brought over some of my homemade Brown Sugar Roasted Pineapple Ice Cream.  Okay, so it wasn’t a pie or a casserole, but it was a hot day, and it would have to do.  I am often sharing my pastry experiments with our various neighbors, simply because I’d rather not lock myself in my house and polish off everything myself.  I lie, sometimes I wish I could.  And Hubby eats a LOT of what I make, which is why I’d rather spread the calorie love with others, but I digress…

Turns out, that one gesture was the beginning of an awesome food exchange between us and our neighbors.  Who knew that we had such talented cooks living just a few steps away!  A day later, they came by our house with a jar of buttery soft, garlicky, pickled jalapenos, which they canned themselves.  Let me repeat, THEY KNOW HOW TO CAN.  Hubby and I have been dying to learn how to can, so that we can enjoy the harvests of our hypothetical garden year-round.  Someday we WILL have a garden and we WILL can everything.  I’d love for them to teach us, and did I mention they BREW THEIR OWN BEER too?  Another at-home foodie hobby I need to learn.  This is gonnabegreat!

That next week, Hubby and I invited them over for dinner.  We really wanted to make ribs on the grill, and we knew we’d have too big a feast for just the two of us.  With the ribs, we made salad, local zucchini and squash, and a strawberry and ganache tarte.  Our neighbors brought over some delicious jalapeno corn bread (made with the above-mentioned pickled jalapenos) and homemade applesauce (again, the canning!).  Feast we did, and it was great getting to know the two of them better.  I was thrilled when my neighbor recognized the tarte crust as a shortbread dough, apparently a popular dessert in his family.  These guys know their food!

If that wasn’t enough, a few nights later they made homemade borscht, and brought a few servings over to share with us.  Borscht!  Who makes borscht at home?  My neighbors do.  I had never tried it before, but it was really, really good.

How cool is it that we get to try some new things from our new neighbors, and get to share good food with them?  It’s such a classic way to get to know people, breaking the proverbial bread, but it totally works.  We’ve already been invited to dinner at their house, and I will certainly be sharing my next culinary creation with them.  Until then, I have one more serving of borscht in the fridge to hold me over…

  1. LOL…to be honest yes, borsht is made our of red beets…I was actually thinking about Shchi, which is a sour cabbage soup. In my moms house there was always some kind of soup. Either borsht, shchi, motza ball soup, chicken soup, black marshroom soup (my favorit). I love food, just not into cooking though. =)

  2. I love the idea of this. A friend and I were commenting on how something like this is hard to do w/a family who has kids because you always worry about bothering them. I guess I should just go for it! We did have neighbors in our old neighborhood that we shared a CSA share with…that was a good way to connect as well and not waste food.

    1. I love the idea of a CSA and am considering going with Sow Fresh. I think that’s a great way to be neighborly and share in the love of good food!

    1. Jennifer, you can find my recipe for Vanilla Custard at the link below. It’s attached to my post about Raspberry Chocolate Chip ice cream, but the base is the same. For the roasted pineapple, I took fresh pineapple slices, placed them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, and sprinkled them with brown sugar. I roasted them at 425 degrees until the sugar began to caramelize. I then chopped it up in my food processor and chilled it. When the ice cream was almost done churning, I added the pineapple in. It makes a pretty pineapply-yellow color and tastes amazing! If you try it, I’d love to hear how it works out for you! Thanks for reading!

  3. Brew their own beer?! Jackpot! 😉 Dh and I have been wanting to do this and just may start this fall! What a lovely exchange you have going! When people rented the house next door (while their new house was being built) we brought over some homemade zucchini bread

    1. (I wasn’t done!) and that launched us into a beautiful friendship! They came over and made us homemade pasta ~ sooooo good! I miss those neighbors!

  4. Aww man, I need neighbors like these! Except I can’t cook, so that would be a short-lived meal exchange. Ideally I would have neighbors who just want to cook awesome stuff and share it with me in exchange for only my gratitude, ha ha. 🙂

  5. I think friendships can be built over a meal, for sure. And a lot of the time, it’s much more important what each person brings to the table, other than food. I find that we could be eating just about anything, but as long as there’s conversation and laughter, that’s what really makes the meal.

  6. I love spending time with friends eating and drinking and just having a great time. I too have awesome neighbors and this Labor Day weekend we are co-hosting a pig roast.

    On another note, was it a red Borsht? Did they serve it hot or cold and did you put sour cream in it? My mom still makes home made Borsht.

    I love your love for food and cooking because I don’t have that in me and its sad that I really never learned how to cook. My mom is a great cook, my late grandfather was an amazing cook and my paternal grandmother is also awesome, I didn’t get that from them though.

    1. I love pig roasts!! My husband’s family hosts one every October, and I look forward to it every year. It has become one of my favorite family traditions. The borsht my neighbor shared was a red borsht. Are there other kinds? I thought it was always made from red beets. I found out about the sour cream addition too late, otherwise I so would have added it! Right up there with cheese and bacon for me…

      1. I definitely share my high calorie desserts with my neighbors and well, anyone that I think is too skinny! Its a great tradition and your meals sound AMAZING! My only issue is with the borsht! I had it once when I was 8 and never haven eaten beets again! My grandmother, who was Russian, gave me borscht instead of the juice I asked for and well….never tried it again 🙂 I love sweet / spicy corn bread so if you can get your hands on that recipe….hehehe!
