If you’re anything like me, you’re constantly looking for fun new activities to do with your family that won’t break the bank. Our very own state capital has plenty of hot spots to enjoy as the weather turns cooler. Here are a few highlights that are not only free, but are also held on weekends, which tends to work out best for this working mom’s schedule!
Looking for something fun AND educational? The iPad Playday, where you can trick or treat for apps, is the best of both worlds! This program is being held on Saturday October 26th and is geared for kiddos ages 1 to Kindergarten. Don’t own an iPad? No problem! One is provided for each family to use during this free event.
Feeling crafty and creative? Or have kids that are all about feathers, glue and glitter (to name just a few)? Make your way over to the Hooker Day Parade Costume Workshop: Family Edition on Sunday Oct. 13th to transform yourself, stroller, wagon, or anything else with wheels! The best part is it’s FREE and all of the supplies are provided for you (along with some expertise from a couple of local artists). All you need to do is sign up online and let them know you’re coming!
Then, put those costumes and decorations to good use by marching in the Hooker Day Parade. Not your thing? No problem! You can still watch the parade with all of its wacky, outrageous costumes and floats, and even catch some candy or beads. Who doesn’t love a good parade?

Delicious food, enjoyable music, and talented artisans, oh my! Located downtown, the Hartford Hodge Podge is an open air market that has all that and more! Enjoy some fresh, crisp fall air while walking down quaint little Pratt Street. Hodge Podge will be taking place the next few Sundays and, yes, admission is free. You need only pay for the goods you decide you can’t leave without!

Well, this is news to me. I just discovered a pretty sweet deal the Wadsworth Atheneum offers families each month. Did you know that on the second Saturday of each month they have a program, appropriately called “Second Saturdays” where they offer free admission as well as the opportunity to explore connections between art and the world around us? Each month consists of a different theme and some programs even include a make and take project!
So, next time you find yourself racking your brain trying to figure out something entertaining to do with your family, take a look at our very own capital city. Hartford (truly) has it!
Thank you so much!!! I LOVE free events 🙂 See you at the Hodge Podge!
Oh yes- and its not in Hartford, but last weekend when i was in Stew Leonards in Newington, they had a sign up that they do free movies and crafts on Friday nights… I’m def checking it out at least once this month

Parking on the surrounding streets are free on Sundays! There are also lots that you can park in that are close to Pratt Street but there is a $5-$10 parking fee.
